The annual session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council took place in Geneva, Switzerland, with the participation of the Azerbaijani delegation, including representatives from the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport and the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva.
As the governing body of the ITU, the Council plays a key role in coordinating the organization’s activities, overseeing the implementation of relevant conventions, and managing its budget and financial resources. Azerbaijan has been a member of the Council since its election at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Bucharest from 26 September to 14 October 2022, and is among the 48 countries represented.
The Council session addressed strategic aspects of global ICT policy and explored ways to respond to current challenges, with discussions aimed at enhancing the organization’s overall performance.
A particular focus was placed on the preparatory process for the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC), which will be hosted by Azerbaijan in Baku from 17–28 November 2025. A report by the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau on the upcoming conference was presented during the session.
Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Sameddin Asadov, who headed the Azerbaijani delegation, delivered a presentation highlighting Azerbaijan’s ongoing preparations for WTDC-2025. He underscored the significance of hosting the conference and reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering digital development based on equal opportunities and enhancing global cooperation through technology.
“This conference, which occupies an important place in the International Telecommunication Union’s calendar of events, will be an important platform to shape the future development of global telecommunications and advance our common digital goals,” noted Sameddin Asadov.
On the sidelines of the session, the Deputy Minister held bilateral meetings with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin and Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau Cosmas Zavazava to discuss expanding cooperation with ITU and review the progress of preparations for WTDC-2025.
Additional meetings were held with representatives from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Poland, where discussions centered on bilateral collaboration in digital development and future partnerships within the ITU framework.
The Council session concluded on 27 June.
